IN THIS LIFE

I've always loved this song, although the first time I heard was some 5 years ago at a live concert. That was some 20 years after it was written and this version was released. As it stands, it is a fairly simple love song. Being loved by someone is worth everything you have to go through. I accept that philosophy totally, even though, in my case, it has, each time, fallen apart.

The reason it finds its way into my little, but growing, selection to leave to my children is that I am now aware that I have applied this attitude to nearly everything in my life. If I have a dream, any dream, then it is worth going through all manner of problems, criticism, even abuse, to achieve that dream, The power of gold, of money, has never stopped me from following that dream, indeed on a couple of occasions it has led me to the situation where I have less than £10 to live on for a month. I have, over the last two weeks, avidly watched the Winter Olympics. I don't follow all sports, just my chosen favourites. I have been moved by the dedication, the perseverance of many athletes from different countries. I will never forget the expression on the face of Ester Ledecka when she saw her time at the finish of her skiing run. She thought the timing was wrong. She couldn't believe what she had done and this, after many experts and coaches told her she should focus on just one discipline. She said no, followed her dream and made it.

I also admire Elise Christie for going through what she suffered last time with abuse etc, having more problems this time and then saying she will be back in four years in Beijing. Amazing courage, dedication, determination and a fantastic example to youngsters. This song, taken away from its original meaning and into the wider world, is also for them.
