I love the idea of writing lyrics about everyday things. You can find love songs everywhere, protest songs abound but the idea of writing a song about
writing a song is less usual. And then listing various people who have come into your life for different reasons just adds to the uniqueness. I've always said
Judith Durham must have one of the purest of voices but listening to this again reminds me that Joan Baez runs her pretty close.
I first saw her on a BBC2 show in the sixties and was entranced and again in 1970 on a little island just off the coast near Southampton. A few other
people were there too. I think one of the reasons I identify with this song is that on an occasion when I was pretty low, a few kids who “must have been
around for at least 150 years” helped me through, possibly without realising it. So, merci, danke, gracias and, kinda thanks.
It was during that time I met up with my own band of gypsies who probably also thought I had a “life unlike their own” but allowed me to be part of
theirs for a while. Sadly, it’s possible, that someone then told them a load of lies which may have changed their opinion of me; I hope not, they were great
people.
