I CAN'T GROW PEACHES ON A CHERRY TREE

Thinking about it, this would probably have been my last offering anyway.

It was 1966 and I heard, somewhere I have no idea where, a lovely little song with the most ridiculous title you will ever find. Sadly, I can't remember now where I got to hear all these obscure songs. Possibly on a pirate radio station, maybe Radio Luxembourg but my record collection, as was, contained a whole number of pretty unusual, and mainly unknown, titles.

Anyhow this little number was called “I can't grow peaches on a cherry tree”, fairly obvious I would suggest and again it was about lost love, this time because the lover, to whom the singer was singing, didn't want to be loved, believed love was an illusion. Now I listen again, it all seems so prophetic of my own life. Not only can you not be loved if you don't believe in love but you can't give love, endlessly, if it isn't being received. Giving is the most important part of a relationship in my view; seeing all you give being rejected hurts deeply. I don't mean tangible things, I don't mean flowers, I don't mean money, I mean support, I mean actually thinking more about the other person than yourself. The problem is when you realise, as I have on at least 5 occasions, that the other person, while accepting your gifts, actually still thinks more about themselves.

Enough of this introspective melancholy, listen to the song and see what you think.
