This is a song to listen to when the lights are out and you need to relax. It's a simpe fact that if you cancel out one of your senses, the others try
to compensate. Listening to music in the dark, something I used to do a lot in my teenage years, really heightens your awareness of the words and the melody.
There are several versions I know of, but this one, by Emi Fujita, appeals to me most because of the way she pronounces “joy”. Needless to say, if you
are getting to know me by now, the idea of not “being contented with yesterday’s glories” and not "living on promises" is one I readily subscribe to. Sorry
father, ended that sentence with a preposition. I would actually like the line that goes “I’ll laugh and I’ll cry and I’ll sing” to be “I’ll laugh and I’ll cry
but I’ll sing” as that fits with the way I use music.
If anyone out there actually interprets the first two lines of the chorus in the same way as I have done I would be amazed. We would also have to know each
other pretty well before I would tell you.
I would always prefer to put up a live performance than a recorded one and so I choose this one. Maybe you
should take my advice and just listen to the words and music. Shut your eyes.
